Ultrafast excitation, ionization and fragmentation of C60

The C60 fullerenes are fascinating objects and even many years after their discovery the photo-physics of C60 is still full of surprises. With their well defined, highly symmetric structure the fullerenes are challenging model systems and examples of an interface between atoms or small molecules and the solid state. The 60 delocalized π electrons in the C60 fullerene give rise to interesting but complex photo physical processes due to their correlation and interaction with the ionic backbone. This Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 13 December 2004 review discusses the photo dynamics of C60 when irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses in an intensity range of 1010 to 1015 W/cm2.
